For Every Dollar, How Much Does The Cocoa Farmer Get?
Please contact us for more information
Answer: Less than a penny. The "higher price" of Fair Trade for North American consumers amounts to less than pocket change. The difference to the cocoa farmer is far more profound. For every dollar spent by North American consumers on chocolate, less than a penny ends up in the pocket of the grower. This is what as known as "Unfair Trade" or "Slave Trade". In many cases the growers are selling for less than it costs to produce, leading to: exploitation of labour, harsh conditions, and the enslavement of children.
We need to promote awareness of how Fairtrade can help restore balance to this crazy, unfair practice in world trade. Our unfettered exploitation is taking its toll. The negative impact on the planet, highlighted by the recent release of The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is an indicator of how important it is to achieve a smaller footprint and a more sensible apporoach to local and indigenous economies.
The Fair Trade Drive is welcoming the support of local businesses, local work places, and community organisations on Commercial Drive.
We are organising a canvassing campaign to help spread the word and we need volunteers to join us and help distribute the leaflets to all businesses, local work places, and community organisations on Commerical Drive.
